Cherry, on the Tiberias boardwalk is a wonderful restaurant. As you stroll down the promenade you can look out over Lake Kineret’s azure waters, and feel the calm of the sea. It is also an area with a lot of history. There has been a city on that spot since 20 CE when Herod Antipas built the town and made it the capital of his Galilean kingdom.
Modern Tiberias has a flavor all its own. With new hotels and shops, and a bustling city center it has come a long way from its modest roots. So has the food.
I recently visited Cherry with a party of four. We were drawn into the restaurant by its relaxed look and the wonderful steel arches that line the outer wall, a nice modern twist on a classic architectural element. The interior is decorated in earthy tones with a beautiful wood floor, and plenty of seating. We opted to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.
The menu is dairy Italian with some unique touches that sets the restaurant apart. They also have a great selection of fish fresh from the Sea.
I had my eye on the Thai Omelet Sandwich, an Asian take on the Israeli favorite, and was ready to order until I saw calzone on the menu. I was sold, as was my mother-in-law. I had the mushroom calzone, and she had the Mediterranean calzone asking our waiter to hold the Bulgarian cheese and add more mozzarella instead. Something he was only too happy to provide. My wife had the cheese ravioli, and bubbie opted for the oven baked St. Peter’s fish.
We were informed that the fish would take 20 minutes and were glad that all the meals came out together so that we could all eat at the same time. The Calzones were beautiful, large and crisp with a wonderful melted center. They were served with a lightly dressed salad and gravy boats with sauces. The mushroom calzone came with a cream sauce, the Mediterranean calzone with tomato sauce. Both were delicious. The ravioli was also a nice sized portion and the filling was quite tasty although the sauce could have used a bit more flavor. Bubbie’s fish was the real star. It came with salad and fries and was cooked to perfection. The fish was flaky and moist, and just a little crisp on top. The fish was not overly seasoned either. My complements to the chef at Cherry for allowing the flavor of the fish to speak for itself.
We were too full for dessert but I hope I can make my way back there and try some of their cheesecake or fruit pie.
The restaurant has a private party room - an intimate space with seating for up to 50 people.
The restaurant offers attractive prices for groups of 15 +.
There is a pay lot for parking at the end of Hayarkon Street (Route 77) on the right. This lot is right behind the restaurant.
