How fortunate for the folks in Rehovot that Haim and Anat Ohana opened their charming restaurant in the heart of their city. Bordeaux restaurant, at the corner of Herzl and Ezra Streets, has that homey, small-town, throwback to another age corner-store feel. Indeed this restaurant fits perfectly into the homey, small-town Rehovot that you can still find on Ezra Street.

Three curved steps take you up from street level into the restaurant. Open the door to a bright and cheerful room decorated in 1950’s style. I half expected Donna Reed to be waiting the tables.

The single-room restaurant is painted bright yellow. Charming pictures and ornaments abound on the walls and on the counter. Seating is along large picture windows overlooking the street. The restaurant is clean and pleasant and we were pleased to discover on that hot summer afternoon, that the air conditioner works very well.

My companion and I had a very pleasant lunch at Bordeaux. The restaurant offers a nice selection of quality dairy (mehadrin) dishes. It is a delightful place to stop for a cup of coffee or for a full dairy meal, including a very reasonable fish meal, which is a real mid-day bargain.

We decided to pass on this special in favor of a lighter meal. The helpful waitress suggested that we choose from the very nice selection of vegetable and cheese blintzes. A portion consists of two blintzes, and you can mix two different kinds. My companion chose two different types of vegetable blintzes and I chose the Bordeaux blintzes, a specialty of the house.

The blintzes are served on a large plate with salad. The vegetable blintzes were rich and creamy, while the Bordeaux blintzes contained hard-boiled egg and white cheese, a combination that I have not encountered before. It was different but not objectionable.

The meals were filling without being too heavy, and we decided to round out our lunch with a cup of coffee and a dessert. We chose from the attractive display of cakes in a refrigerator section under the counter. The tiramisu tasted as good as it looked. The portion was large enough to be shared by two calorie-conscious women with a love of sweets. The whipped cream topped cappuccino was also a treat. All told, it was a very nice lunch and an experience worth repeating.

The bill for two orders of blintzes and two soft drinks, two cups of coffee and one dessert came to NIS 140.

schneck, Date: January 2005. Description: I visited at Bordeaux the previous Saterday evening and was really pleased with the service with all the waiters standing ready to my side. Different to all other resterants the food arrived really prompt and was very tasty. After the meal it was wonderful to sit and relax there with the lovly calm Jewish music in the background.

Submitted by: Eliezer & Bracha W. Date: October 2002. Description: I took the family to try it out Bordeaux, and sample a number of different items, and each one was quite good. The decor is decidedly clean, neat and trendy. [The restaurant is] similar to some of the modern cafes in Tel Aviv but with soft, pleasant music and lighting, a colorful scheme, and fine food, Bordeaux seems to have all the pieces in place.
As mehadrin consumers, we were especially pleased to see that the entire menu is under Rav Rubin's supervision - the "Badatz Mehadrin". The owner and chef, Chaim Ochana, spoke with me briefly, about how he has reworked some of his recipes and is in the process of redoing some others to meet the higher kashrut standards. Chaim's 20 years of experience were well expressed in each dish.
The service was warm, friendly, "heimish".
