Angelo is located on Horkanos
Street, a quiet street off Heleni HaMalka. Horkanus runs parallel to Jaffa
road, which is only a 2 minute walk away.
Angelo has a
few tables outside for outdoor dining in good weather, and two floors within the restaurant. It has a warm
and intimate atmosphere, with vivid, fresh colours evident in the decor
and echoed in the table linen, and large framed pictures of various
types of pasta placed along the walls. There is a pleasing
attention to detail; little window boxes of plants are set along the
upstairs balustrade, and the bathrooms are attractive and well-kept.
Angelo is owned
and run by a recent immigrant from Rome, and his expertise is displayed
to delicious effect in the menu. This is without a doubt the best Italian
restaurant I have been to in Israel. The full range
of dishes are on offer, with a large selection of antipasti, salads,
soups, pasta, pizza and fish. This diner definitely recommends the focaccia
Mediterranea, with its thin chewy crust topped with cherry tomatoes,
fresh basil and concia, which are zucchini strips sauteed in olive oil
with a subtle tang of balsamic vinegar - divine! The pasta is
truly delicious, obviously fresh and served al dente, with a wide variety
of sauces and shapes. Try any ravioli dish; it comes filled with spinach,
mushroom, salmon or the more unusual broccoli, with your choice of fresh
sauces; tomato, olive oil, or cream based.
The dessert
menu range is small but appropriate, with a choice of tiramisu, pannacotta
or gelato and a couple of others. The tiramisu is delicious; fresh and
creamy without being heavy, with a delicate hint of rum. There is a feeling
here that the customer is an honoured guest. The waiters and waitresses
are without exception polite and attentive; even sitting upstairs out
of the way the service is nothing short of excellent. Any requests are
happily fulfilled - if you want to switch round a sauce or pasta shape
for a combination that is not on the menu, they'll be pleased to accommodate
you. This is a genuine
Italian dining experience, which is not to be missed.
The food, ambiance
and service are all above par, and the cost is not too high; a main
dish will cost you between 30 and 40 shekel, 65 for fish. You could
easily enjoy a three-course meal with drinks for under 100 shekel (per
person)
Business lunch from 12:00 noon till 4:00pm soup or salad including Focaccia and a choice
of pasta NIS 39 or salmon steak NIS 49
