Gustoso

November 2015
Heres something new a kosher meaty pizza restaurant. Most if not all pizza restaurants in Israel are dairy. As Gustoso is a kosher restaurant, the pizza in fact the whole restaurant has no milk or cheese. Will a meaty pizza be tasty? We wondered. What else is on offer? Will a non-meat eater find happiness at a meaty pizza restaurant?

February 2016: A shiur from Raanana held their Siyum Masechet at Gustoso. The restaurant was very cooperative and this was a great venue. The group (12 diners) was hosted in a separate space away from the main dining area. The restaurant turned off the music during the siyum. The food was excellent, the service was very good. The cost was about 150 shekels per person and 10 shekels for the underground parking. There is also street parking. Recommended for small events.

Gustoso is located in the courtyard of the Ziv building. There is plenty of indoor seating and additional outdoor seating. Street parking is available on the side streets off Wallenberg in the evening there is an underground pay parking lot in the Ziv building, and pay parking lots on the side streets.

Gustoso - Indoors

Gustoso is a lovely restaurant. The dcor is warm and woody. The atmosphere is young and fun. There is a long bar with seating, high tables and chairs, and plenty of comfortable standard height seating.

About The Gustoso Menu

Gustoso has one of the most creative menus that we have seen. The restaurant has a concept that is clear and well executed. About half of the dishes at this meat restaurant are veggie/parve. The parve dishes on the evening menu are mostly vegetable dishes. There is a parve pasta dish on the lunch menu.

The dinner menu (Hebrew only at the time of this writing) is in 4 sections:

Munchies light starters
Siftach Openers
Lifnim Pizzas
Finale - Desserts
Gustoso - Calzone Gustoso - Pasta

For me, the starters are the most fun part of the menu. These are usually small dishes, varied, nicely presented, that are a good platform to show off the creativity of the chef. The Gustoso menu has two sections of starters Munchies and Siftach. That is my kind of restaurant. We chose a parve veggie dish from each of the opener categories.

Munchies are light starters and include favorites like fried cauliflower, mushroom tempura, sweet potato chips adamame, etc. These go really well with a glass of beer, or to whet-your-appetite before the pizza. We enjoyed a platter of fried cauliflower served with sweet chili sauce on a bed of lettuce. As we were planning to also have a main course, this dish had enough florets for both me and my companion to share.

Siftach openers are a bit more substantial than the munchies. We enjoyed a dish of grilled eggplant with tomatoes, olives, and herbs as the opener, served with wedges of focaccia. The eggplant was dotted with techina, which looked like cheese, but we know better.

The main courses and the signature dish at Gustoso is the meaty pizza. The crispy thin-crusted pizza is baked in the restaurants on site stone taboun oven. There is a nice variety of pizzas available in two sizes: 23cm and 30cm round.

At Gustoso, pizzas are a gourmet main dish. The pizza meat is lamb or calf ground meat that is slow cooked with root vegetables. Pizza is available with white or whole wheat dough or a gluten free variety. There is a selection of toppings including red onions, mushrooms, olives, dried tomatoes and various sliced sausage.

Gustoso - Pizza

There are many different types of pizza, categorized by the flavors of different country cuisine. Choose from Argentinean flavored, Greek, Italian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Mexican, Iraqi, etc. A variety of toppings are available and you can even make your own pizza, combining different toppings. My companion, who has a preference for spicy foods, chose the Moroccan pizza. Expect this to be hot and spicy, he was warned, and it was. The ground lamb meat was flavored with authentic Moroccan herbs and spices. The pizza was topped with Merguez sausage and fresh chili. The pizza was dotted with techina that looked like cheese, but we know better.

Pizza, whether dairy or meat, go well with a glass of beer. There is a wide selection of beer, but my companion chose the exotic Weihenstephan beer. Originally a monastary brewery, this is touted as the oldest brewery in the world, from the year 1040. Not just beer, the restaurant has a full bar and a great alcohol menu. There are cocktails, whiskey, vodka, tequila, martinis, Campari and various sweet liquors.

For your Finale the restaurant offers several desserts. We did not avail ourselves of the desserts at this visit.

Gustoso is the perfect restaurant to visit with small or large groups. Reasonably priced with something for everyone, this restaurant is a perfect choice for an intimate party or group dinner. We will certainly recommend Gustoso to our shiur for our next siyum.

Munchies NIS 25 30. Salads NIS 42 49. Pizza NIS 44 68. Weihenstephan Beer NIS 28 for 1/3 liter.
