An evening in Olive & Fish – the new sister restaurant of the wonderful Olive Restaurant on Emek Refaim – conjures up images of close friends, good conversation, and fine dining. If that sounds inviting to you, read on.
Located directly across from the Inbal Hotel – convenient for tourists and locals alike – Olive & Fish is already a popular restaurant. The intimate space (about 10 tables indoors and the same number on the terrace outside) filled up rapidly while we were there at dinnertime. Yet this lovely restaurant never lost its elegant, low-key ambiance and there was no disturbing din to intrude on the pleasure. The décor is understated and stylish – just what you’d expect of a restaurant of this caliber.
Olive & Fish is primarily a fish restaurant. There are basic chicken and meat dishes offered, but fish is where the chef puts most of his energy and creativity. Appetizers run from 38-48 NIS. I opened with a Deep Fried Mini Fish Mix, which turned out to be four little almost-whole fish served with a lively sauce on the side. One needs a little finesse to maneuver around the bones, but if you have the patience and the expertise, it’s worth it. My companion went with the soup of the day, a red lentil soup (25 NIS), and it was delicious.
Alongside the appetizer, we received a loaf of warm bread and four little dishes of anti-pasti, including grilled zucchini and sliced corn on the cob. We were also served a lightly dressed lettuce salad, as refresher, between the first and main courses (a nice touch).
There is a chalkboard on which the specials of the day are listed and I went with the intriguing Mallard Breast served with a Dried Fruit Sauce (80 NIS) – superb! My companion figured he couldn’t go wrong with the Sirloin Steak (90 NIS) and he was right – it was grilled perfectly and served with a wonderful cherry sauce. Potatoes or rice are offered on the side.
As I mentioned, there is a big selection of fish – grilled or baked (75-85 NIS) – and there are salads, as well; a Roast Beef Salad (55 NIS) caught my attention and I would definitely try it next time. Desserts (26 NIS) looked great and the Pecan Pie with vanilla ice cream didn’t disappoint.
The meal for two (without wine) came to about 300 NIS, not an insignificant amount, but not wildly extravagant either. The restaurant has a room upstairs, which seats about 50, and which is perfect for a special, small event. For private affairs, the restaurant will supply Glatt meat, if so desired.
Olive & Fish is a sophisticated yet unpretentious eatery, perfect for almost any occasion. Given its popularity, reservations are recommended. Once you get in, though, sit back, unwind, and enjoy the Olive & Fish experience – you won’t forget it.
Note: The eLuna discount coupon does not apply to the business lunch, NIS 55/65.
