River

January 2016
I confess. I just love a good Asian/sushi restaurant. That's because I am a sucker for a beautiful presentation. I love the minimalist decor of the Asian restaurants and the beautifully presented foods.

Let face it - there is nothing like sushi. The colorful sliced rolls look like gems nested on velvet. They are so beautiful they look too good to eat. But eat them you will, and enjoy every morsel.

River - Sashimi Salmon

We welcome the kosher River Asian restaurant/sushi bar to eLuna.com. This restaurant is in the B.S.R. building on Ben Gurion Street in Ramat Gan. It is one of only two kosher branches in the River restaurant chain. Note that the B.S.R. building is in Ramat Gan. Cross the street and you are in Bnei Brak. One side Ramat Gan. The other side Bnei Brak.

The B.S.R. building is just off Abba Hillel St across from Kenyon Ayalon. The best place to park is at the Abba Hillel end of the Ayalon mall parking lot. River is on the street level at the southern corner of the BSR building. Keep walking. You'll see it.

This is a restaurant with options. The modest size corner restaurant has outdoor seating and indoor seating. There is bar seating and table seating, take away, and parties. The sushi chef behind the bar makes for good food theater. The restaurant is open to diners Sunday through Thursday. Friday is reserved for parties. Britot, engagements, birthday parties, etc. This is the place to celebrate them..

About The River Kosher Menu

We took our seats at a comfortable table and we were handed the electronic menu. Turn it on and peruse the menu with descriptions and photos of each item. That does take a big part of the guesswork out of ordering.

It does not take a prophet to know that we are going for the sushi. Inside outs with veggies, my standard sushi choice. The 3-lettuce salad, they said, and though i usually do not go to restaurants to order lettuce, we do follow recommendations so we did. At meat restaurants my dining companion eats meat. Seems simple enough.

River - SaladThe lettuce salad was not the vegetable salad that the dietician had in mind. Different types of crispy lettuce was served with a sweet sauce. Candied peanuts dotted the salad which was topped with crispy fried sweet potato chips. The portion was large enough for both of us to share, which we gladly did. Sweet but light, the salad was tasty and a good way to start our meal. I am going to have to rethink my policy of not ordering lettuce at restaurants.

My companion likes his food meaty and spicy and I like my food veggie and flavorful but not hot and certainly not spicy. That is one good reason that we go to so many restaurants - so that we can each order according to our own preferences.

So along came the Hanoi Curry, a thick stew with root vegetables and chicken breast and a healthy dose of curry. This was served with white sticky rice, to bland out the spicy stew. My companion will have none of that sissy rice. He take his spices straight. The warm stew was thick and rich in meat and vegetables. Perfect for what ails ye.

Drinks! They don't call this a bar for nothing. We had a lovely Aperol Shpritz drink served in spacey round glasses decorated with a slice of orange. Nice touch. Thank you, River, for introducing us to a new alcoholic drink.

The restaurant was feeling magnanimous when we were there, and brought out a platter of foods for us to taste. We especially enjoyed the risotto balls, coated and fried and yummy. These we enjoyed with cooked sweet onions, We make sweet onions at home without oil. I think these were also oil-free. We also had a very nice chicken-filled dumpling dish that looked like kreplach.

River - Podi Skewers

After eating a full meal we often pass on dessert. But the desserts at River, we were assured, must be savored after dinner. We topped off our meal with individual glasses of Panna Cotta flavored with pistachio and strawberry, and one order of Creme Brulee. Recommended.

This restaurant welcomes children. So when you come to River, bring the kids. There are special childrens dishes, sized and priced for little tummies. And while they are waiting, your kids will enjoy some coloring books that the restaurant provides to keep juniors in their seats. Indeed they have thought of everything.
