Airport City is one of the largest business parks in the center of the country. It is home to hundreds of companies, government offices, and logistics centers. It is so big it is actually called a city!

Airport City is that big cluster of modern buildings on Highway 1 between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, just east of Ben Gurion Airport. If you have not had business in one of the offices you may not have been to Airport City. But all of that is now changing. You won't be coming to Airport City just for business. You will be coming for the food.

In the beginning there were office buildings. Then another, and another, and the numbers grew. Where there is business, there are restaurants. But for a time none of them had a teudat kashrut. Then came Air Caffe. Named for the "Air" in Airport City, Air Caffe is a stand-alone restaurant, not to be confused with the Arcaffe chain.

The restaurant gained popularity for its good quality reasonably priced light dairy menu, the tasty pasta and pizza, coffee and great desserts. The location, between the population centers but out of any major city became a draw, as it was an ideal central meeting place for folks from the different parts of the country, The teudat kashrut opened the restaurant to kosher diners and Air Caffe became the most popular restaurant on the block.

Gaston, the excellent meat restaurant followed. And this summer several other restaurants in Airport City have taken on Kashrut.

Air Caffe continues to be the mainstay of the kosher restaurants in Airport City. Like so many of our readers, our visit to Air Caffe this summer was not our first visit to Air Caffe. We met friends at the cafe on several occasions and enjoyed the light menu each time. The restaurant has comfortable indoor and outdoor seating on a rustic deck. This is a large restaurant and tables are pleasantly spaced. There is plenty of parking, though the free parking is limited. In the late afternoon when many of the offices close, there is plenty of parking available.

The food menu offers starters, salads, pasta dishes, pizza and fish dishes. There are also shakes, cocktails and drinks. I am a big fan of starters, which I often think are the best dishes at a restaurant. The Portobello mushrooms stuffed with goat cheese, cheese balls and Focaccia and dips looked so attractive I was prepared to make my entire meal of these starters. But that won't do, certainly not for this write up. On previous visits to the restaurant I chose from the salads. The vegetables are always fresh and crispy and the dressing just right. Looking to try a different dish on this visit we decided to take a tip from the owner.

What is the signature dish at Air Caffe?
"The pizza," says owner Omer, is the highlight of the menu. The pizza dough is made from scratch in house. The dough is left to rise overnight and made into the delicious fresh pizza, as it is ordered throughout the day. Also, said Omer, are our pasta dishes, again with quality dough and fine combinations. And we were left to choose.

There are several choices of ravioli, Gnocci in cream of spinach, and fettuccine. Our waitress, who knew the menu better than we did, kindly suggested the sweet potato ravioli, an excellent suggestion. The sauces are all made in house, and indeed, the ravioli was tasty. But it was the sauce that did it, sweetened by a healthy dose of silan that is balanced by a sprinkling of pine nuts. We finished this till the last bite, scooping up the sauce from the bottom of the bowl.

Since you did so well with the pasta, we told the waitress, what do you recommend for the dessert? The hot chocolate cake is the most popular dessert, but not my favorite. We passed on the Tiramisu and went with the pecan pie. This is an individual pie with a lovely crust and a rich pecan filling. This was served with a generous scoop of ice cream.

Air Caffe is an excellent choice for smachot. The convenient location, the easy access just off the highway and the availability of parking make it an ideal venue for bar/bat mitzvot, britot, etc. The light dairy menu is ideal for a daytime get together and your guests will be licking their fingers.
