Moses

January 2016
At the time of this writing, there are but three kosher branches in the Moses Restaurant chain. Holy Moses, we visited the branch restaurant in the holy city.

Moses Restaurant is located in the big central circular hall at Cinema City, ground floor. Park in the free underground parking lot and take the elevator up to level 0. Nothing could be more convenient especially on a rainy Jerusalem afternoon.

The spiffy dimmed interior of the restaurant was a welcome contrast to the glaring lights of the main cinema city hall. In the late afternoon there was plenty of seating at the bar or at tables throughout the spacious restaurant. We chose seats with a view at the window facing the restaurant patio and the Supreme Court building.

About The Moses Restaurant Menu

Moses is a proper burger restaurant. Not a burger bar, Moses is a proper sit-down restaurant. Unusual for a burger restaurant, Moses also offers a number of vegetarian and vegan dishes. These dishes, at most meaty burger restaurants, barely get a supporting role. But at Moses they could win prizes. At Moses, carnivores and vegans can break bread together and neither will be slighted. Offer something for everyone I always say, and everyone will come.

The ala carte menu, on a clearly printed single folded card, offers a variety of first courses, salads, grilled sandwiches, hot grill dishes, health oriented dishes, and a kids menu. The menu card is available in Hebrew and in English.

In addition, the restaurant offers very cost-effective fixed price meals at off hours. The 3-course business lunch is available from noon to 5pm week days. And for the night owls, or the folks coming out of a late-night movie, there is an attractively priced menu served after 11pm.

Perusing the menu, my companion leapt to the grilled sandwich section, where he chose the Vietnam sandwich: chicken with vegetables in a japetta roll. Side dishes must be ordered separately. Choose from the usual items: chips, rice, etc and an enticing fried onion slivers. I was drawn to the Healthy dish section which lists mostly non-meat dishes with their caloric value and the breakdown into carbs, protein, and whether the dish is gluten-free.

But before we got to the mains, we started with soup and salads. The red tomato soup hit the spot on our cold wintery afternoon. Three very different salads show the restaurants versatility. The Moses classic salad is a no-frills iceberg lettuce & onion affair. The Health salad for the slightly more adventuresome, is dominated by shredded red cabbage, highlighted by kohlrabi and ginger. But the course salad, called simply Vegetables, is the one. Cucumbers, lettuce and peppers are coarsely cut (non-Israeli fashion) and served with a very pleasant dressing.

And now to the burgers. No shortage of burgers at Moses. There is the classic Moses Beef burger in sizes ranging from 150 to 300 grams. The crunch burger is the same, but the burger is breaded and fried an interesting twist. The Phili is a beef burger served with a fried egg. The Moses flagship dish is the Art Burger: a 250 gram burger of beef, lamb and veal. This Moses specialty appears in a box on the menu, so dont miss it.

Moses - Hamburger

The Missouri burger, from the Health menu, is the restaurants recommendation for vegetarian diners. The Missouri is served just like a meat burger, on a roll with lettuce and sliced tomato and onions. What side goes with a burger? Chips of course, and there you have it. The veggie burger meat is made of tofu, legumes, mushrooms and nuts. All of this on a thick roll with the chips, is quite a mouthful and at 525 calories, I am not sure exactly how healthy this is. A lighter vegetarian option is the spring roll served with a sweet sauce. This is a cold dish with three vegetable-filled rolls cut diagonally and attractively presented.

Someone at Moses really likes their sweets. If nothing else, you must top off your meal with one of the delicious even though parve Moses desserts. The Crme Brulee with pineapple is the star of the show. A close second are the Nougat Cookielida - two huge yummy sandwich cookies filled with ice cream and chocolate Truffle Cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Any of these desserts are a great way to end a good Moses meal.

In addition to the foods and the very pleasant ambiance, the staff and the service make the Moses dining experience quite exceptional. We were impressed with the number of servers on the floor at any time, up and about and ready to accommodate your needs. The staff is clearly well trained. After we ordered, our waitress patiently recited the items, thus reducing the chance of error. We were very pleased with the response time of the kitchen. Although not very busy at the hour that we visited the restaurant, the foods were served quickly and efficiently. We were in and out in a bit over an hour record time for dinner at any restaurant.
