If you are searching for the perfect deli sandwich, look no further. Run, don’t walk, to the New Deli Sandwich Bar. There are two branch restaurants: the original restaurant at the bottom of Rechov Hillel (on the corner of Rechov Yoel Solomon) and a second branch on Emek Refaim in the German Colony. Many surprises await you there, not the least of which is fabulous food, along with good service and value for your money.

Both branches of New Deli offer the same menu and both offer quick and efficient service with “a smile.” We thoroughly enjoyed a corned beef sandwich and pastrami sandwich each on rye bread, a beef hotdog with Dijon mustard and sauerkraut (a novelty here in Jerusalem), cole slaw, a portion of piping hot French fried potato wedges and fresh lemonade. A quick survey of customers in the sandwich bar indicated high levels of satisfaction with their menu choices which included the Grilled Lamb sandwich, the Marinated Chicken sandwich, many hot dogs, the steak and the New Deli salads, fries and onion rings.

One can order a variety of sandwiches and the staff is only too willing to accommodate particular requests and combinations. Hot deli sandwiches include corned beef, peppered beef, roast beef, pastrami, Italian salami and honey roasted turkey. Prices range from 21 NIS-26 NIS and an additional 8 NIS will get you an overstuffed sandwich of your choice. Grilled sandwiches include entrecote steak, marinated chicken and lamb. Prices range from 24 NIS- 32 NIS.

An array of vegetables and sauces, such as BBQ, garlic mayonnaise, pesto, sweet chili, deli or Dijon mustard and “charif”, are available to create your ideal sandwich. If that is not enough for the perfect meal one can order all beef hot dogs, spicy or BBQ chicken wings, French fried chips or onion rings.

Salad lovers and vegetarians need not despair since there are choices for each. Salads include steak, lamb, chicken and deli and all are grilled with onions and served on a generous portion of vegetables also dressed with sauces of your choice. Vegetarians can choose from tuna sandwiches, tuna salad with fresh vegetables or green salad dressed with lemon juice and olive oil. Prices range from 18 NIS-34 NIS.

During our visit owner Liron Ben-Zikri pointed out several new additions to the menu. Sandwiches can now be ordered on rye bread as well as baguettes and giabettas (a good choice if you don’t want the thickness of the bread to overwhelm the meat inside) and coleslaw is now available as a side dish as well as a sandwich stuffer. If you are looking for something new to drink, New Deli is now offering Mountain Dew along with a full line of Dr. Brown soft drinks and Dr. Pepper as well as fresh lemonade available in ½ or 1 liter sizes.

If you can’t make it to the restaurant, New Deli delivers city wide. Delivery is 5 NIS with a 35 NIS minimum, not a difficult amount to spend considering the excellent food. And don’t forget to let New Deli make your Shabbat, simcha or party special with their meat platters. Just call for details and prices – you won’t be sorry!
