Hayo Haya (Once Upon a Time) is a quaint and charming dairy bistro restaurant on the outskirts of Mahaneh Yehuda market. This is a cute place to have a sit-down before or after shopping in the market, or to meet friends in a convenient location.

One of the nice things about a restaurant near the market is that you can be sure that the food is really fresh. Need another tomato? All the tomatoes that you will ever need, and all the other ingredients as well, are just steps away. And speaking of convenient, you will find out just how convenient this location is, when the light rail starts operating.

The menu includes basic dairy foods: rich salads, fish, pasta with a variety of sauces and sinfully delicious desserts. The theme at Hayo Haya - and hence the name - is nostalgia for times gone by. So in addition to the salads and pastas, the restaurant offers classic shakshuka, and several other classics.

Not only is the menu from a simpler time, but the prices are also from a time when a shekel was a shekel. And just to show you how important the shekel really is, the menu is organized by price. Breakfast (served all day) and light meals such as soup and bread, hummus or pizza start at NIS 20 per person. The prices then rise in increments of NIS 5 or 10 for the different salads, pasta dishes, pancakes or artichoke hearts. The most expensive dishes are NIS 60 for salmon or a cheese and vegetable platter. Desserts are a bargain at NIS 15 for ice cream, sorbet, assorted cakes or chocolate mousse or soufflé.

Hayo Haya is a good choice for meeting a friend in town for morning coffee, a business lunch, an evening out with the chevra or even a romantic night out. Hayo Haya has indoor and outdoor seating, is accessible to handicapped patrons, is child-friendly and offers wireless internet. Ask the staff about parties and catering.
