Gaston is a meat centric restaurant, if ever there was one. Not just a restaurant, Gaston is one part of a meat enterprise founded by the Lagziel brothers. The brothers began with a small butchery that grew into the well-known “Meat Man” factory and its popular shops. You may also know their fast-casual “Beef” restaurants, another successful Lagziel eatery.

Fedrik was the brothers’ first full restaurant, opened in Modiin over a decade ago. It’s now getting a fresh new makeover, and you’ll be seeing it here soon.

Gaston Restaurant is the Lagziel brothers top-of-the-line fine-dining end of their business. And fine dining it is. The restaurant is beautifully appointed. The food is exceptional both in its presentation and the flavors. The restaurant has much to be proud of, but they are most proud of their "white coat service." Polite and ingratiating, knowledgeable and attentive, the waiters come to your table dressed in sparkling clean and pressed white coats. It's a wow.

"I cannot pass up wings" my companion declared, perusing the menu. "Just a few to taste" will do it. And out came a platter of 10 large wings coated in a sweet and sticky sauce, just as he likes them. Along with the platter came two wipes. They thought ahead.

Asado meat filled croquettes are the signature starter at Gaston. A good number of crispy balls are presented on a round plate with a dip in the center. The balls have a crispy coating and are filled with an unexpectedly sweet Asado meat. The balls were so tasty on their own, there was no need for the dip. The dish is beautifully presented and so enticing your dining partner may insist on sharing.

The standout non-meat starter is the beet tartare (that's beet, not beef). The presentation is stunning, and the flavor matches it bite for bite. I'll admit, the intense red of beets can sometimes put me off, but this dish was so delicious I forgot all about the color. It arrives as a neat round mold topped with crunchy nuts. The bright, earthy beets are beautifully balanced by a balsamic and apple vinaigrette. It's the perfect opener - full of flavor, satisfying, and tempting you for more, yet light enough not to overshadow the main course.

"Would you like wine with your meal?" There is a very large selection of wines, and bottles adorn the walls of the restaurant. Wine bottles and corks are a central part of the decor. Gaston even has its own blend. Indeed a meal of this quality deserves a glass of fine wine, but as it was lunch, we passed.

For a restaurant that specializes in meat, they certainly know how to prepare fish. The fish fillet that I chose for my main dish was just as I like it. How did they know? The pieces were thin yet nicely meaty, with a perfectly crisp top. They were served over a bed of soft,"buttery" mashed potatoes (kosher, of course, so no actual butter), which added just the right touch.

My companion opted for the Sinta (sirloin) steak, cooked to a perfect medium rare - just the way he prefers it. The kitchen clearly loves its sauces, but the steak had such rich flavor on its own that the chimichurri on the side wasn't really necessary. The restaurant is fully accessible. A convenient parking in a lot alongside the restaurant.
