The Fruit of the Vine

Taste in wine is as individual and varied as it is in food and other drink. Wine need not be either or - either sweet or dry, either fruity or oakey, either bubbly or smooth. There are tastes for every palate and pocketbook.

Kosher wine is no exception. Today, kosher wines are produced in vineyards from California to Chile. They are as varied in grape, taste and price as all other wines.

Keeping in mind that there is more to wine than red, white and rose, this section will allow us to sample a variety of wines in a full range of prices.

Evaluating a Wine

In evaluating a wine there are certain criteria to examine:
the variety of grape or grapes used in the wine
the region in which the grapes were grown
the amount of time the wine has aged
the aging process
the number of bottles produced
the size and reputation of the winery
the price per bottle
the ability of the wine to be stored over a period of years

Each wine will be rated twice
· on a scale from 1 through 10 for taste
· on a scale of +++ or --- for quality for price

Price guidelines for wine are as follows:
· inexpensive ---- less than 35 NIS
· low to moderate ---- 35-60 NIS
· moderate ---- 60-90 NIS
· expensive ---- over 90 NIS
